The english version of the title is “Ab-Normal Beauty”. This movie was awesome….artistically, aesthetically and plot-wise. Directed by Oxide Pang Chun, this trippy, and creepy film is about a uniquely talented art/photography student carrying childhood trauma baggage and has a disconnected relationship with her mother.

In typical artistic high-quality indie film style, the cinematography, color saturation and sparce dialogue, really create a visually amazing movie that covers some really heavy topics.

The main character becomes fascinated with photographing death, pain and suffering and then then later is riddled by constant panic attacks, nervous breakdowns, and an inability to accept love from anyone. As the movie progresses, visceral images and flashes of her childhood start showing up a increase in prominence in her life.

The plot thickens with a guy that has a crush on her and her best girlfriend who is a lesbian and also has a co-dependent, kind of twisted crush on her. So you have two people that want to love her deeply and she is unable to accept love due to her childhood trauma, mixed with all the artsy visual approach you’d expect from a film like this. Excellent character as well.

This film was heavy for me being a survivor of childhood trauma, an artist, a photographer, and most importantly a father.

I’d highly recommend it to anyone into foreign film.

Peace out,

Rich
